A few years ago I was on a California beach looking for something wonderful to photograph. What I had in mind was a grand oceanscape with huge waves crashing against some large rocks while interesting clouds floated over the lush green coastal mountains and, because dusk was nearly upon me, some "sweet light" to illuminate the whole scene. It didn't happen! Instead, I glanced down at these colorful pebbles in some brackish water. It occurred to me that what I was looking for was nothing more than a massive accumulation of what lay at my feet. They formed a nice compositional pattern in the coarse sand and looked interesting to me so, I photographed them. This image soon became one of the most popular items in my portfolio.
