This image, made in the Devil's Kitchen, is very similar to my image entitled "Devil's Kitchen" but this one was exposed at dusk. I will repeat here the same interesting story.
Devil's Kitchen is in a very remote section of the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Motorized access to this wonderful area begins by ascending some very steep switch backs over aptly named Elephant Hill. The approach to Elephant Hill presents a barrier of solid rock that seems to rise almost vertically in front of you with no possible way through. The switch backs are so extreme that it is necessary to negotiate a flat area know as the "turn table" (lined with "chicken rocks" to help prevent falling off the mountain) on the way up and then back down one section on the even steeper back side because the turn is too sharp, even for a short wheel base vehicle. Four-wheel drive with high clearance and expert driving skills are an absolute necessity to reach Devil's Kitchen but the reward is well worth the effort.
Behind me in this image of Devil's Kitchen are four very nice campsites maintained by the National Park Service. One of them has large overhanging rocks that make the campsite seem just like a large enclosed room.
Just beyond this view of the Needles is Chesler Park and more of nature's wonders. I had no trouble relaxing for hours in our very comfortable campsite, visually captivated by the glorious art gallery in front of me.
